Polymorphism, complexity, and selective forces operating on the HLA system were reviewed. Re~ combinational and functional data indicated a complex genetic region with many loci whose functions were correlated with the immune system and cellular differentiation and were also somehow interrelated with the immunoglobulins. frhe SCJ~indicates that this paper has been cited in over 325 publications.)
